Salamander Designs Archetype Modular Shelving
Modular shelving units from Salamander Designs can be changed
to accommodate varying component ensembles. Thanks to a system
that employs hexagonal nuts on solid steel rods, shelf height
is a matter of choice. Units can be placed side by side or atop
one another and can be linked by special bridging shelves. Neoprene
washers are sandwiched between metal ones to damp vibration,
while mounting options include wheels, rubber feet, or heavy
metal spikes ( the last nearly a half pound each).
My 36-inch-high, five shelf, natural cherry Archetype 5.0 came
with adequate illustrated instructions and both a level and a
wrench; the only other tool required was a tape measure. The
90-minute assembly was simple but tedious, since I tired quickly
of spinning nuts down threaded rods to their appropriate height.
Others may finish more quickly, depending on how critical they
are about spacing.
I very much like the Archetypes appearance; its black-oxide gunbarrel-finish
hardware contrasts strikingly with the warm grain of the solid
hardwood shelves. Prices for the five-shelf units range from
$249.95 to $379.95. Two- and three-shelf units (20 and 28 inches,
respectively) are available, and other finishes include classic
oak, hazelnut, black lacquer, and a black lacquer/cherry combination.
